Value stream mapping is one Lean tool for identifying current problems in a process, prioritizing improvement areas, and planning the target state.
Value Stream Mapping (VSM) is a process-modeling technique that captures not just process steps, but also the connections between them, event frequencies, inventory levels, and process times. Value stream maps are aimed above all at shortening lead time, speeding up flow, and eliminating different types of waste.
For an experienced process modeler, value stream mapping brings some new elements: new mapping symbols to learn, gathering shop-floor data (“Gemba walks”), and creative process-improvement ideation based on Lean methods. Value stream maps are used to prioritize improvement areas, identify problems, and plan the target state.
What you’ll get from this course
You’ll gain the skills to create a value stream map, validate it, and make sure it’s carried through successfully.
You’ll learn the basic current-state and future-state symbols and how to use them, by practicing on a process you’re already familiar with.
You’ll get useful checklists covering what to watch for when mapping the current and future state, and how to handle typical problem situations.
You’ll get an introduction to basic Lean techniques for improving a process.
You’ll get familiar with a typical Lean value-stream development-plan template, where improvement actions are recorded.
Who’s it for?
This training is aimed at developers, supervisors, process owners, and auditors — in both manufacturing and service-type operations.
Learning methods
This is a one-day course combining theory, discussion, practical examples and exercises, plus organization-specific deep-dive discussion.
Participants receive a rich set of materials — models and templates that let you start doing value stream mapping in your own organization.
